The relationship between music celebrities and the Grand Theft Auto universe has always been close, but the case of American rapper and producer T-Pain (Faheem Rashad Najm) starred in one of the most talked-about paradoxes in the Roleplay community.

T-Pain was not a mere paid sponsor: he was a passionate and regular player on NoPixel, the most prestigious and demanding roleplay server in the English-speaking world. There he spent hours in front of the microphone improvising stories and managing virtual nightclubs.

However, overnight, T-Pain completely disappeared from the streets of Los Santos in FiveM. Sometime later, in a live stream that went viral, the multi-Grammy Award winner confessed the real reason behind his absence.

T-Pain’s live confession

During a Twitch stream in January 2024, a viewer asked him why he had stopped playing on NoPixel. T-Pain responded bluntly:

“I used to be on NoPixel all day. But then I started working on GTA VI and they told me: ‘You can’t do RP anymore, because you’re against… basically you’re working for us, but you’re on a project with people who are against us’.”

The musician recounted that Rockstar Games lawyers and producers gave him a contractual ultimatum:

“They said to me: ‘What would happen if someone took your album and re-released it without your permission and more people were listening to it?’. And I thought: ‘I get it, but I was having a fucking great time’. So I had to stop playing on NoPixel and focus on my work for the game.”

The great paradox: The purchase of FiveM shortly after

The most ironic part of the story came just a few months after Rockstar banned T-Pain from participating in NoPixel: Rockstar Games formally bought Cfx.re, the development team of FiveM on which NoPixel operated.

T-Pain himself commented on it with humor and disbelief in his subsequent streams:

“And then, after banning me from playing because they said FiveM was against their interests… they go and buy the damn company that makes the Roleplay! I could have kept playing the whole time.”

What role will T-Pain have in GTA 6

Although Take-Two’s non-disclosure agreements (NDA) prevent the artist from revealing exact details of his contract, his involvement in GTA VI goes far beyond a simple song on the radio:

  1. Voice and character acting: The community assumes that T-Pain will play a supporting character with a physical presence in the Vice City plot, possibly linked to the music industry, recording studios, or entertainment venues in the city.
  2. Radio station production: The musician’s talent for fusing R&B, hip-hop, and auto-tune fits perfectly with the atmosphere of South Florida, where he will collaborate as an announcer or musical selector for one of the main stations.
  3. The bridge between the community and the studio: T-Pain’s experience as a roleplay veteran has helped Rockstar designers understand firsthand what interaction mechanics, spatial voice chat, and vehicle customization the most dedicated FiveM players demand.
